Foreigner Town

View of ocean in Okpo
This past Saturday brought with it the first beautiful weather and even more stunning landscape. Ryan and I bussed it over to Okpo, a neighboring town here on the island. Not knowing where we were going we randomly got off the bus in the city and just cruised around for a few hours. The view was beyond amazing- even with the massive ships.

Making it to the bay we spotted the run-down amusement park we had been looking for. The amusement park sat upon a high "mountain." At a distance the trek seemed hardly a challenge. About midway up the steep San Francisco style hill my cowboy boots made me feel as if I'd made the improper shoe choice. But alas, we reached the top and the eeriness began to sink in. The hole in the fence of which we crawled led us to an even higher mountain top. The dilapidated sign of sketched on Disney characters brought a sense of sadness upon us.

Bumper cars and roller coaster

"The Viking"
The first sight of a run down carousel, horses fallen into the ground, broken down bumper cars and gutted buildings made us realize this place had to have been vacant for more than just a few years. Legend has it that the amusement park was haunted by a little girl who once died on the roller coaster, providing reason for the closing. We later found out the mystery that lie behind the abandoned park to be less of a mystery and more of just a bad sense of management and luck on behalf of the owner. Nevertheless exploring the remains was intriguing, heartbreaking and just lonely. Made me wish I was a photographer to capture such a unique subject as this.

Okpo is the main town for all of the ship builders so the town caters to the foreigner population. All the bars and restaurants provided "western" food and activities. It was strange because while we still felt like we were in Asia it had a weird air to the town, for everyone we passed on the street looked like us but spoke different languages from French to Russian and every English accent in between.
