I Will Survive

After meeting my new kindergarten class this afternoon, and introducing myself in front of a room of parents who don't speak English, I made my way back to the temp apartment. Along the way I stopped at a family mart and picked up a giant water (can't drink the water here for some reason, makes you sick I guess), a chocolate bar and: ram-yen, or as Americans call it, ramen.

I'd like to preface: I honestly wouldn't have survived college or the broke years after had ramen not been a staple in my diet. Always beef, always eaten like pasta (no water). I'd like to consider myself a ramen expert.

I had NO idea ramen was such a popular dish in Korea. I knew the dish was made famous from asia, but Korean's love it too, they even consider it a legitimate meal choice. I've also been told the ramen here is superb.  SO I think I won't be going hungry in Korea. An entire aisle at HomePlus (their version of walmart) is devoted to the tasty quick dinner fix, I actually think they have more varieties of ramen than Americans have of cereals.

Not knowing how to read yet I had to base this evening's ramen selection on package pictures. Not wanting to risk it with a package that had a photo of a squid on it I went with just vegetables. Safe enough.
Success. My first home cooked Korean meal and I enjoyed every bite of it. Naturally spicy, specks of parsley and overall intriguing flavor like ramen had never provided me all tied up in the mess of noodles just the way I like it. I hope to think its not as full as sodium as back home and I'll be full for hours.
